Sudan Conflict: Egypt table draft resolution

Convening in Cairo, Egypt, Arab League permanent members held Monday (May 1st) an emergency assembly at the conflict in Sudan. Egypt`s deputy permanent representative presented a draft resolution  to halt the fighting in the neighboring country.

“Egypt calls (in the draft decision) for immediate and complete cessation of conflict, and for all (conflicting) groups to contribute their efforts to give precedence to the Sudanese people and prevent bloodshed, that’s a prerequisite for returning to political talks by which the crisis may be resolved comprehensively,” Obaida el- Dandarawy said.

Officially, at the least 528 people have been killed and nearly 4,600 wounded in the violence between the military and Sudan`s paramilitary organization RSF.

Despite the formal extension of a truce, fierce fighting raged Monday among Sudan’s warring sides.

About 50,000 people have sought asylum in neighboring countries, including Egypt, the Central African Republic and Chad.

Martin Griffiths, a senior UN humanitarian official, lamented the exponential increase in travel costs in the hardest-hit areas.
