South Africa builds field hospital to fight cholera outbreak
In an effort to prevent and control the spread of cholera in the town of Hammanskraal, near the South African capital of Pretoria, Gauteng Health has set up a field hospital in Kanana to manage the growing infection rate.
The Ministry of Health has set up temporary tents to treat residents with symptoms of dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea.
Patients were given oral or intravenous fluids on arrival, with critically ill patients transferred to a hospital in Tshwane for further care and hospitalization.
The ministry said in a recent statement that 229 people are currently hospitalized due to cholera, while at least 23 people have died.
