Martin Amidu: New Chief Judge – Akufo-Addo’s long game to impose his selfish interests ahead of the 2024 election
Nana Akufo-Addo’s modus operandi in exercising the constitutional rights granted to him to select important and sensitive constitutional bodies in order to realize the doctrine of separation of powers guided by his selfish interests and personal politics, contrary to the sovereign national interests of the citizens of Ghana.
The selection of Chief Justice to replace Mr. Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who will retire as Chief Justice on 24 May 2023, shows all the signs of personal political gains dictated by Nana Addo long game he planned years before assuming the presidency on January 7, 2017.
The choice of Mrs. Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo (Nee G.A.E. Sackey, listed on the reels of lawyers in Ghana with number 2086 on October 2, 1987) was identified and matched to Nana Akufo-Addo’s long game.
This is the third of the last three that he has to play in the hope that nature will favor his ploy to literally impose his will, contrary to the spirit of the 1992 Constitution in the general election in 2024.
Judge Gertrude Torkornoo fulfills the statutory requirements to be appointed Chief Justice even though she is not the oldest or most learned by delivering famous Supreme Court convictions. But she also meets other non-legal requirements that make Nana Akufo-Addo confident that she is a suitable choice to realize her long political game.
She is believed to be the granddaughter of the late Major (Rtd.) Sam Acquah, who was gruesomely murdered and martyred in 1982 under the rule of the PNDC. She is from Winneba but was born and raised in Cape Coast, where most people from the Central Region in her parents’ peer group called home in the past. Her parents were teachers with her father Abraham Kofi Saah Sackey, who became the director of education.
