Tesla has issued a recall of 271 Model S and Model X vehicles in China due to problems with seat belts and in-vehicle cameras.
This recall affects 234 Model S and Model X vehicles manufactured between February 5 and May 16, 2023. During vehicle manufacture or maintenance, seat belts and tensioners the front seats have been disassembled and when reassembled, these parts may not have been repaired properly to the specified pre-tensioning anchors.
China’s State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR) notes that in the event of an accident, the affected Model S and Model X seat belts may not function properly as such systems, this creates a security risk.
To address this issue, Tesla will test the affected vehicles’ seat belts and front-seat pre-tensioner anchor points free of charge. If any connections are found to be outside of design specifications, they will be reset to specifications. If necessary, all seat belts will be replaced.
The recall also affects 37 Model S and Model X models manufactured between January 17 and July 11, 2023. These vehicles had problems with the installation of the front-facing cameras because they failed to meet design requirements ’tilt angle. This can cause active safety features and driver warnings to malfunction, creating a safety risk.
To fix camera issues on affected vehicles, Tesla will perform a free front-facing camera tilt test for owners. If any of the camera angles are out of specification, they will be corrected. Tesla China imports Model S and Model X from the Fremont factory, as the Shanghai Gigafactory only produces Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers.
The facility is the company’s largest factory in the world, with a production capacity of more than 750,000 units per year, according to Tesla’s Q2 2023.
Tesla also sold a total of 64,285 Chinese-made vehicles in July, including exports and domestic deliveries, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
