Death toll from flooding in DR Congo exceeds 170
Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo say the death toll from severe flooding and landslides has risen to 176. The governor of South Kivu province said others were still missing because of fears they were buried in the mud. At least two villages on Lake Kivu – Bushushu and Nyamukubi – were submerged when rivers in eastern DR Congo burst their banks.
Severe landslides also destroyed wooden houses with corrugated iron roofs. Rescue teams said there were piles of bodies in muddy clothes.
Local media reported that in one of the villages, more than three-quarters of the houses, along with medical centers and schools, had been swept away.
Across Lake Kivu in neighboring Rwanda, at least 130 people have been killed by floods and landslides.
