5,000 Nigerians students still stuck in conflict Sudan

Hundreds of Nigerian students are still stranded in conflict-ridden Sudan. This is where a fight between two warring generals claimed more than 500 lives.

Nigeria has begun its first evacuation of about 3,500 citizens, most of them students, as a fragile ceasefire has allowed foreigners to escape.

They closed the road. They said not a single car would leave until all cars had been delivered. Only five vehicles have been delivered so far, and now we have 35 more vehicles waiting to be moved,” said Abdullahi Hasan. Mashi, a Nigerian student studying at African International University in Khartoum,  waiting to be evacuated from Sudan.

Officials say there are over 5,000 Nigerians in Sudan. UN agencies have reported that at least 459 people have been killed and more than 4,000 injured since fighting began, and that Sudanese civilians have fled to Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.
